THE PREMISE.
In the remnants of America, marriages are arranged to help preserve the human race.

• The polar ice caps have melted, leaving the geography of the world to look something like this. This began in the 2010s and then accelerated rapidly in the 2020s – aided, in part, by the Great Middle Eastern War – until they were completely melted by 2030. This caused mass flooding disasters in coastal cities around the world. In America, the entire state of Florida is underwater, as are the cities of Boston, New York, Philadelphia, New Orleans and San Diego. Washington, D.C., while not entirely underwater, has been abandoned as the capital due to the rising water level. Los Angeles has fared much the same way.
• The average temperature has risen about twenty degrees Fahrenheit, from 58 to 80 degrees. This has led many sections of the globe near the Equator to be largely uninhabitable. Hardest hit are Africa and South America. Many South Americans have fled north, hoping to be protected by the New American Government.
• In 2024, exacerbated by the growing global warming issue, tensions between Old America and the Middle East hit a boiling point. In an unprecedented move, Old America launched a series of brutal attacks on the region, stretching from Libya through Pakistan, essentially wiping the region off the map.
• Reactions to the Great Middle Eastern War, which lasted all of three days, were swift and violent. In the United States, a revolting public railed against the actions of its government. The revolution was also quick, and the President, Senate and Congress were ousted from office. Taking over were younger, more peaceful individuals. They reached out to the floundering nations of Canada and Mexico and together they formed New America. This new nation's focus would be not just on peace, but equality and most importantly, survival. Because in 2025, the time of the revolution, things were starting to look bleak.
• Scientists reported that due to pollution, nuclear disasters, and the senseless war in the Middle East, the environment was close to maximum toxicity levels. Not only was cancer becoming more widespread, but an alarming trend had begun worldwide that no one was able to ignore: the birth rate was plummeting at a staggering rate. In 2025, only 1 in 30 women were able to carry a pregnancy to term. This rate declined steadily until in 2032, it stopped altogether. To the already struggling nations, it seemed as though the human race was doomed. While some looked to science for answers, others turned to religion, and still others embraced a nihilistic laissez faire attitude, convinced that although the world was now at relative peace, humanity would go out with a whimper, not a bang.
• In 2048, the New American government announced to its citizens that scientists had had a breakthrough. Through a series of fertility treatments, humans should once again be able to procreate. A trial run on a volunteer couple proved successful; in early 2049, they gave birth to a girl, Adina Glass – or as she became more commonly known, Baby Zero, the first human born in seventeen years. A month later, however, the CRE, who have been experimenting with artificial insemination, had their own first success: a baby boy known as Alexei. AND SO THE NEW ARMS RACE TO REPOPULATE THE PLANET BEGAN.
• This event brought a sweeping arm of change in New America. New legislature was pushed through quickly, backed by an overly eager public, seeing hope for the first time in two decades. The measures, according to some, were radical – but much had to be done, in order to secure the future of the human race. And not just the human race. The American race. Soon it was decreed that all healthy, able-bodied citizens between the ages of 18 and 30 fitting a certain genetic criteria were to be chosen as the first cohort of genetic pioneers, relocated to government-built communities as part of an urban planning experiment. Those given the call were not given the opportunity to decline – after all, who wouldn't want to do their country the duty of producing heirs, so that the planet will have someone to inherit it?

WORLD MAP CIRCA 2050.

Red Zone - Uninhabitable due to radiation. Scientists estimate the area will be able to sustain human life again in approximately 3000 years. Oops.
Yellow Zone - Largely uninhabitable for humans due to high temperature extremes. Scientists estimate this change is permanent unless some way is discovered to cool down the average global temperature.

Global Nations and Territories
1. New America - Consists of the regions of Canada, the United States, Mexico, and the United Kingdom territory.
2. South America - Those who were unable to escape to New America still inhabit the lower half of this southern continent. Chile, Argentina and Brazil have combined governments and are attempting to colonize the stretches of Antarctica below them.
3. Europe – the continent is a shadow of its former self, unable to consolidate a central government. Many citizens have emigrated to either New America or the Chinese-Russian Empire.
4. The Chinese-Russian Empire - after the Great Middle Eastern War, Russia and China agreed to ally with each other to protect themselves from the western threat and combined to form one nation. However, when America imploded on itself in the late 2020s, the CRE began to worry less about militarization and more with saving the human race. A second cold war has started, but this arms race is quite different than the one in the last century. India, Korea and Japan joined the CRE in the 2030s. Vladimir Putin is still president.
5. Australia – aside from having the northern half of their continent too scorching to be inhabitable, and a large portion of their previous cities underwater, they're doing kind of all right. Aside from the whole, no children born in the last 20 years dilemma. They're kind of hoping once New America or the CRE gets it right, they'll share.
6. Africa - No one wants to go here. In the few areas that are habitable, people are either starving to death or dying of AIDS. It's not pretty.
7. Antarctica – This place is actually sort of inhabitable now. It's mainly South America and Australia trying to colonize it. Basically the new Wild West.

LIFE IN NEW AMERICA.
The least of many evils. Maybe.

• New America consists of the areas of the United States, Canada, Mexico, and the remnants of the United Kingdom – which had most of its citizens evacuated to the North American continent during the heatwave that lasted from 2032 to 2035.
• The capital city is Denver, Colorado. Because it is very, very landlocked.
• Quality of life in New America is very much either "have" or "have not." Those who live in cities or suburbs have experienced an increasingly enlightened existence over the last twenty-five years. However, those living in areas that were struck by flooding and abandoned, or were never very developed in the first place have reverted back to very primitive living standards. Electricity is a commodity in these areas; cable and internet barely more than a legend. There are those who willingly live off-the-grid in this manner, finding their new government far too invasive. However, much of the goal of the Herrenvolk Experiment is to "modernize" these fringe communities, catalog its citizens, and utilize them, so that all of New America can prosper from the urban planning process.
• To help with the war on drugs – and due to the growing malaise of the Doomed Generation – marijuana was legalized in 2028. This dramatically revamped the prison system, as the government could now use the space to house more dangerous criminals... namely murderers, rapists, burglars and anyone who spoke out too emphatically against the government. Haha, just kidding about that last one. Those people are terrorists! Terrorists are dangerous. They can be jailed without trial, because Patriot Act.
• Needless to say, being sent to prison is largely feared. Theft is also treated harshly, with long-term sentences being handed out for stealing even small amounts. The government's message is that everyone should be a productive member of society, and to their credit, their urban planning process over the last twenty-five years has created a lot of jobs, the likes of which America hadn't seen since the New Deal.
• The New American Government has put a lot of stress on innovation, particularly in the scientific fields. Since the country's founding in 2025, there have been a great many breakthroughs by New American scientists. All cars are electric (since we can't get our oil from the Middle East anymore, whoopsie), and solar and wind power are used in all the civilized areas. High speed trains have been built across the country and is currently more popular than even air travel.
• Agriculture has seen a boon, and FDA regulations have made it law that all produce, meat and dairy are organic and without any artificial additives.
• There is a shortage on fish, due to the radiation dumped into the oceans from various nuclear disasters and fallout from the Middle Eastern War.
• There have also been many advances on disease, and more effective treatments for cancer and mental disorders are being discovered every day.
• All of this produces a strangely varied public opinion and morale. With all the advancements, many people are optimistic about the future. But until the initial success of the Herrenvolk Experiment a couple years ago, many believed the human race was hurtling toward extinction, hence the popular name of the Doomed Generation given to those born in the last thirty years.
• There's some Big Brother is watching shit going on. All the residences in the civilized portion of the country come equipped with a central home computer, which can do shit like draw your bath, lock your doors and order groceries, and also talk to you like Jarvis in the Iron Man films or Siri. Unfortunately, it also means the government is watching you. Always. So basically nothing has changed from real life.
• Every New American citizen has been issued an ID bracelet that they must wear at all times. This bracelet functions as a variety of things – bank account/debit card access (as all physical money has been abolished), driver's license and state ID, and it also continuously monitors a person's general health and wellness, alerting the person if they are experiencing a medical malady that they should see a doctor about. Of course, it also knows where you are all the time. Obviously, those living in off-the-grid communities don't have these bracelets, which is a point of contention with the more liberal members of the public, because they are willingly living in ignorance, etc etc.
• I really feel like there's something about a new church being formed to deal with these End Times but I need to think about it more.
• More stuff here as I think of it or other people think of it.

THE HERRENVOLK EXPERIMENT.
To get people on board, I'm probably gonna have to change it from the name the Nazis used.

• For the last twenty-five years, scientists around the world have been toiling to do something about the rapidly declining birthrate. They've finally done it! Maybe. The first cohort is about to be tested, thanks to the recently passed Family Planning law.
